The company reported that an abnormal amount of Vitamin D in three products as a result of supplier scheduling error.
The natural dog and cat food provider The Blue Buffalo Company released a statement today announcing their voluntary recall of a few, select dry dog food products, including Wilderness Chicken-Dog, Basics Salmon-Dog and Large Breed Adult Dog, all under the BLUE label. Blue Buffalo founder Bill Bishop released a statement regarding the abnormal levels of Vitamin D in each specific product, which was the result of a reported scheduling error from the company’s ingredient supplier. “We believe that some of the Vitamin D supplement may have been carried over into our products, resulting in more Vitamin D than is called for in our formulas,” Bishop in the statement.
The release, which was addressed to “fellow pet parents,” addressed any health concerns for the increase in Vitamin D. “While the potential of increased Vitamin D presents no serious health risk, and any negative reaction to these products has been confined to a very small segment of the canine population who appear to be sensitive to higher levels of Vitamin D, we have a zero tolerance for any product that does not meet our specifications.” According to a report from CBS, 36 canines have already been reported with signs of excessive Vitamin D in their systems.
The recall will include specifically Blue Wilderness Chicken in bag sizes 4.5lb, 11lb and 24lb with expiration dates July 1211B, July1211B, Jul2611Z, July2711Z and July2811Z; Blue Basics Salmon for the 11lb and 24lb bags with expiration dates Aug2111B and Augu2211B; and Blue Large Breed Adult Chicken for the 30lb bag with expiration dates Sept2211P, Sep2311P and Oct2611P.
